On Friday, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that India moved its staff from its consulate in Myanmar’s Sittwe to Yangon, in view of the ongoing conflict in the Rakhine state. He added that the consulate in Mandalay remains fully functional. Additionally, Jaiswal said that the embassy was working to repatriate three boys from Uttar Pradesh who were allegedly abducted in Myanmar and forced to work in a fake call centre there.
Eleven people were killed in Pakistan’s restive Balochistan province in two separate attacks on Friday. Nine of them were killed after gunmen abducted them from a bus on the highway, while two others died after the gunmen forced their car to stop and shot them. Ten to twelve armed men were involved in the attack.
Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu said on Saturday that the second batch of Indian military personnel had left the country on 9 April. The first batch of Indian military personnel was replaced by civilian staff on 11 March, while the final batch is scheduled to leave the country by the 10 May deadline. Muizzu made the announcement at an election rally ahead of the Parliamentary elections on 21 April.
On Sunday, the US House of Representatives prepared to hold more than a dozen new votes this week on legislation imposing sanctions on Iran and its allies in response to the drone and missile attacks on Israel. House Republicans will convene on Monday evening to discuss the recent attack and potential additional defence funding. The proposed bills aim to enforce strict sanctions on Iran, prevent circumvention of existing sanctions, limit Iranian trade with US financial institutions, and penalise Chinese firms purchasing oil from Iran.
The Chinese government reported on Saturday that floods, droughts, an earthquake, and freezing conditions resulted in direct economic losses of $3.28 billion in the first quarter of 2024. These disasters claimed the lives of 79 individuals, necessitated emergency relocation and resettlement for 110,000 people, and affected 10.4 million individuals across 26 regions and provinces during this period.
The Taliban said on Sunday that severe flooding caused by seasonal rains in Afghanistan led to the deaths of at least 33 individuals and injured 27 others over a span of three days. Over 600 houses were destroyed, approximately 200 livestock perished, and about 800 hectares of agricultural land and over 85 kilometres of roads were damaged.
